Matthias Church
The Matthias Church is located in the heart of Budapest, in the Castle District. Originally it was called the Virgin Mary church, but the Hungarian tradition names it after the great King, Matthias Corvinus, who built the original church. The church gave home of his weddings and also many coronations, like of Charles IV, the last Habsburg king in 1916. The church was destroyed many times in the Hungarian history, especially during the Turkish occupation, but it was rebuilt after the plans of the great architect, Frigyes Schulek. Inside the church can be found sacred relics and replicas of the Hungarian royal crown and the coronation jewels.
St. Stephen's Basilica
The Neo-Renaissance Basilica is with the Parliament together the highest building, and the largest church in Budapest. Its dome height is 96 m and the capacity of the church is about 8.500 persons. The Basilica was built through 50 years, it was finished in 1905. The interior is amazing with its enormous size and ornamentation, and the mosaics covering the cupola dome, which were ordered from Venice. In one of the several chapels you can find the most important Hungarian Holy relic, the right hand of the first Hungarian king, Saint Stephen, who established the Hungarian State and brought in Christianity as the state religion to Hungary. Behind the beautiful altars colonnade you can see the sculptures of the twelve apostles.
